However, I was quickly reminded that fashion history can pop up anywhere (I have had similar reminders while on jaunts to other unfamiliar California Museums). In this case, I was particularly excited because so much of the work related not only to fashion and clothing history, but also to California history.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2576\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2576\" style=\"width: 243px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fashionhistorian.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/1.jpg\" data-lightbox=\"gal[2570]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2576\" title=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/fashionhistorian.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/1-300x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fashionhistorian.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/1-300x250.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fashionhistorian.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/1.jpg 919w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2576\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jeannie Crocker&#39;s broach (by Tiffany &amp; Co), c1880<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The rooms devoted to the history of the Crocker Art Museum itself held the largest &#8216;cash&#8217; of fashion related objects. These were full of fascinating and beautiful pieces relating to Margaret  Crocker and the rest of the Crocker family, including three stunning  1870s-80s broaches (two by Tiffany and Co.), a related portrait of  Margaret Crocker wearing one of the broaches (dating to 1877), an 1860s  hair wreath, and a group of Crocker family photographs, among other  things.<\/p>\n<p>Several other paintings in the museum&#8217;s California history collection held my interest for more than a few minutes, including two lovely portraits, one of Little Miss San Francisco (painted in 1853) and another of <a href=\"http:\/\/crockerartmuseum.org\/digital-crocker\/item\/iportrait-of-mary-blanche-hubbardi-1889\">Mary Blanche Hubbard<\/a> by California artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0520202031\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=fashhistandwo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0520202031\">Mary Curtis Richardson<\/a> (painted in 1889 and reminded me of John Singer Sargent&#8217;s work and which the museum compared to Whistler).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2587\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2587\" style=\"width: 193px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fashionhistorian.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/12.jpg\" data-lightbox=\"gal[2570]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2587\" title=\"12\" src=\"http:\/\/fashionhistorian.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/12-237x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fashionhistorian.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/12-237x300.jpg 237w, https:\/\/fashionhistorian.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/12-810x1024.jpg 810w, https:\/\/fashionhistorian.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/12.jpg 1526w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2587\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Little Miss San Francisco by Charles Christian Nahl, 1853<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2589\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2589\" style=\"width: 167px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fashionhistorian.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/14.jpg\" data-lightbox=\"gal[2570]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2589\" title=\"14\" src=\"http:\/\/fashionhistorian.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/14-186x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"167\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2589\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Portrait of Mary Blanche Hubbard by Mary Curtis Richardson, 1889<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On other floors, I found still more examples of fashionable and ethnic dress &#8211; from African Kente Cloth (Ghana) and an Indigo-dyed man&#8217;s robe (Nigeria) to Japanese tomesode (a type of kimono) and <a href=\"http:\/\/crockerartmuseum.org\/component\/zoo\/item\/plastron-nd-2-2?category_id=6\">17th century samurai armor<\/a> to an Indonesian <a href=\" http:\/\/crockerartmuseum.org\/digital-crocker\/item\/spirit-costume-jiwawoka-ca-1990-2000\">Spirit Costume<\/a> (Papua) made almost entirely of rattan.<\/p>\n<p>All-in-all, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Crocker Art Museum and loved the surprises I found there.
