I have several coming down the  line, so you might hear about them from time to time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/ws.assoc-amazon.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;Format=_SL160_&amp;ASIN=0520270029&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;WS=1&amp;tag=fashhistandwo-20&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/>Accompanying an  exhibit at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecjm.org\/index.php?option=com_ccevents&amp;scope=exbt&amp;task=detail&amp;oid=9\" target=\"_blank\">Contemporary Jewish Museum<\/a> in San Francisco (opening today), Seeing Gertrude Stein: Five Stories by Wanda M. Corn and Tirza True Latimer includes a detailed look on   Steins creation of her public persona and the role fashion played in her   identity.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0520270029&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399349\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the authors, &#8220;Stein and Toklas had perfected their late-life look by the time they met [Cecil] Beaton in the mid-thirties. Horst Estate (Via the Contemporary Jewish Museum)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/04\/13\/tender-bow-ties\/\"><strong>New York Times Style Magazine<\/strong><\/a> recently provided an excerpt of the chapter titled &#8220;Dress&#8221; which  chronicles both Gertrude Stein&#8217;s and Alice B. Tklas relationships with  their appearance and with &#8216;fashion&#8217; in general.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As girls they spent time at dressmakers, shoemakers, and milliners, where they acquired day dresses and casual shoes for home life; heels, suits, hats, and gloves for the public sphere; and gowns for special evening events. . . . Alice&#8217;s hats, a friend wrote, &#8220;were all in perfect condition, kept in their original pretty boxes from the most famous milliners. She had superb examples of inlaid feather work by <strong>Paul Poiret<\/strong>, huge black-and-gold birds of paradise. . . .<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Happily, the exhibition includes vests, pins and other articles worn by Stein, and the book includes photographs and famous artwork featuring Stein&#8217;s image.
